Swear an oath towards a Green Diwali this year...

It's again that day of the year we have been waiting for, with zeal and zest, simply for its sheer splendour, mithais, and festivity, the sparkle of the lights and the cataclysmic sounds of the crackers.

The lure of rockets breaking into numerous illuminating lights, sizzling chakris, ear shattering bombs and glittering phuljharis are too hard to resist. Moreover, our own kiddos who do not want to be left behind, in comparison to their friends, are reason enough for that big hole in our pocket. And to add fuel to the fire, newer innovations in crackers every year are giving us some more reasons to splurge, simply for the sake of trials!

Unfortunately, the festival that is primarily a fiesta of crackers does more damage to the environment with its toxic emittances like carbon, sulphur, zinc, lead, that we fail to see, under the guise of an indispensable festival. Impromptu accidents also cannot be ruled out. The upshot in the sense of hearing loss and high blood pressure in elders due to loud crackers, respiratory diseases, skin allergies, eye inflammations are other irritants that add to the damage to our health and well being.

Luckily, the govt. has taken an astute step and announced 10 P.M. as the deadline and 125 decibels as the maximum volume limit in the hope of counteracting the undesirable effects of the festival.

For this reason and in keeping with the revolution towards an eco friendly globe, many urbanites are vouching for a cleaner and eco friendly Diwali this year. We can join them too. So, get ready and be a part of the noble crusade by:

-Buying low sulphur crackers that are available in the market as they do not pollute the environment.

-Choosing crackers that emanate colourful lights with out making noise.

-Avoiding loud bombs.

-Vowing to buy only crackers that have disclaimers on their cartons that they do not employ child labour.

-Doing some good, like donating to some underprivileged child, or to some worthy social cause, rather than burning the green currencies for fruitless pleasure. Could there be any better Diwali than illuminating smiles on the faces of those less fortunate?
