Travelling helps me gain more knowledge than books.
The Basilica church in Bologna marks the historical center of the city. It is called the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca. The path leading to this exotic monument is reminiscent of the French architecture. The 666 arches, originally meant to act as a shield against the vagaries of nature and attackers, exudes a charm of its own which remains unparalleled even today.
The Bolognese Palace called the Palazzo d'Accursio (or Palazzo Comunale) located in the most popular square Piazza Maggiore is rightfully coined as the city's Town Hall since 2008. A panoramic view of the history and culture of the town can be witnessed in the various sections of the Palace. The Civic Art Collection, with paintings from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, mesmerized my senses completely. Being an artist myself, I appreciate the brush of colours which are aesthetic representation of life. The Museo Morandi, with the works by Giorgio Morandi donated to the comune by his family are exhibited in "tranquil and open" premises, all instilled with the subtle light which exudes from every image, very similar to the twilights haunting the silent hills around Bologna.
By preserving Museo Morandi's study - room, which has been renovated with time tested measures, accentuates the feeling of entering the pages of history oblivious to the leaping hi-tech advancements of the current age. As you admire each masterpiece, you can enhance your knowledge by reading about his own art and literature together with a vast amount of historical documents relevant to his life and his works in a special library created for the same purpose.
The upper section holds more surprises as the facade features a portcullis and the famous Madonna with Child by Niccolo dell'Arca. Over the portal is a large bronze statue of the Bolognese Pope Gregory XIII (1580).
The journey of life is more prominent when you enter the Hall of the Communal Council, on the first floor, which is a gallery adorning the Bolognese Senators by Angelo Michele Colonna and Gioacchino Pizzoli belonging to the early 17th century. From the same period is the Vidoniana Gallery with an exhibition of paintings, furniture.
The Farnese Hall, on the second floor, where King Charles V was crowned has delicate designs, minutely etched with complex patterns. A Royal Beauty unmatched by any standards. The Hall is decorated with stories of the city from the Middle Ages to the 17th century.
Surrounded by the major tourist destinations of Bologna like Palazzo dei Notai, the Palazzo d'Accursio, the Palazzo del Podesta and the Basilica of San Petronio, Piazza Maggiore is the ultimate zone where we can witness a harmonious cultural combination of contemporary art and live music. It is a large square in Bologna, Italy.
