Over the years I see a major transformation amongst the women folk in India. When I was invited to crown Miss DSOI (Defence services officer's institute) and also receive the 'Woman of the year award 2008' by Indian chamber of commerce and industry, I realised how the times have changed and women have started creating a mark for themselves in every arena. Women are an epitome of beauty, grace and enduring will power. But what exactly is real beauty? It is the external manifestation of the true internal beauty.
Beauty is like the elusive grail that many have pursued but few have attained. It is an aspiration nurtured by everybody and yet not many have had more than a fleeting glimpse of it. In an epoch where physical perfection has become the mass obsession, it would be pertinent to question the various facets of beauty. Does beauty curtail itself to the incidence of fair skin, an optimum height and svelte figure? This has become the most accepted perception of beauty in today's era - or is it something more - something that transcends the physical in to the realms of the spiritual.
The ephemeral presence of physical perfection is equivalent to the existence of the lily that blooms for a night and fades away in the harsh day light. Similarly physical beauty slips away from ones possession as the test of time takes its toll. The irony is that while the world identifies this mirage as beauty and runs after it, true beauty is a stalwart presence that most fail to recognize.
A person's face is like a window to their soul and while a face might not be adorned with classically handsome features, the glow of a pure soul illuminates it to make it seem divine. The mask of make up used to enhance physical attributes and hide the flaws is not capable of imparting the aura that self-respect, truthfulness and compassion brings to one's personality. It requires a friendly inviting disposition to make people comfortable around a person and not the accessories carried by that person. A dignified carriage is often all that is required to lend an indelible grace to ones personality.
It would seem then that we are pursuing leprechaun gold while the true treasure lies within us. We therefore should make sure that we dig deep within us and discover the attributes of true beauty even as we pursue the mirage of physical perfection.
